The museum's collection includes a wide variety of artwork, including foreign works ranging from mid-19th Century Romanticism to those representing the School of Paris, as well as Japanese modern art from the Meiji Period to the present.

The museum stands out especially for its exemplary collection of works by French Impressionist artists, including Cezanne, Monet, Renoir, van Gogh and others. A horse-chestnut tree, a gift to the museum from Picasso's son, stands in the museum's courtyard.
